Q: WHAT YEAR WAS JESUS CRUCIFIED?

A: IT DEPENDS WHAT CALENDAR YOU ARE USING!

On the Gregorian calendar (the one you might have on your wall) the year was 30 AD.*

On the Hebrew calendar, sometimes called the biblical calendar, the year was 4076 AM.*

*Note: Regarding the timeline of Christ’s death, the following breakdown will make clear the passage of time:

Christ was born in the fall of 5 BC. From the fall of 5 BC to the fall of 1 BC is 4 years. From the fall of 1 BC to the fall of 26 AD is 26 years, placing His age at 30 years when He began His ministry, as stated in Luke 3:23. The reason for confusion is that we think in terms of the Gregorian calendar rather than the Hebrew calculated calendar, which of course, was the calendar used by the writers of the New Testament.

The Hebrew calendar begins in the spring of the year, the time of the Passover, meaning that He was 33 & ½ years old at His death. He was crucified at the very beginning of 30 AD, which cannot be counted.

This occurred on a Wednesday, fulfilling Christ’s prophesy of Mathew 12:38-40, which required Christ to be buried for three days and three nights. GREGORIAN CALENDAR (THE ONE YOU HAVE ON YOUR DESK OR WALL)

Christian Biblical Calendar Converter Abbreviations: BC/AD (Before Christ/Anno Domini) or BCE/CE (Before Common Era/After Common Era)

The Gregorian calendar is sometimes called the Christian calendar or Western calendar. Some calendar scholars reference the Julian calendar, which is similar but lacks modern leap year corrections.

HEBREW CALENDAR (THE ONE IN THE BIBLE)

Abbreviations: AM (Anno Mundi – Latin: “in the year of the world”, Hebrew: “from the creation of the world”)

The Hebrew calendar is sometimes called the Biblical calendar or Jewish calendar, which draws from the Old Testament and calls creation the start of year 1. Converting the calendar is sometimes tricky because the first day of the year 1 is not January 1st.

ANCIENT HEBREW CALENDAR CONVERTER

The above tool allows you to enter either the Gregorian calendar date (like 2015, 2016 or 2017) or the Hebrew calendar date and switch between the two.
